How To Whiten Teeth

teeth-whitening-basics.jpgAn important part of getting whiter teeth and improved oral care is to visit your dentist regularly. They will provide you with 3 – 6 month check ups, review any cavities or decay, take necessary action and finally clean & polish your teeth.

If you already have a healthy mouth with no gum disease or unfilled cavities or once you have gone through this process you are ready to start out on getting your teeth whiter.

You will not get whiter teeth overnight and there are several stages to getting whiter, brighter teeth and a healthy mouth.

It is a gradual process that over time will give you improved health benefits as well as a smile that you have dreamed of. However here is our highly recommended 5 star plan...

How To Whiten Teeth Safely...

1. Get A Good Toothbrush

Do not hold back on your choice of toothbrush – and remember it is vitally important to change either the brush or brush heads every 3 months, as they do soften and become ‘flared’ over time. A good brush generally has soft bristle’s and rotating heads make the brushing process easier than a manual process, however it is personal preference.

Tooth brushing is very important to improve your oral care and remove plaque on a daily basis

2. Choose A Strong Toothpaste

Whilst a whitening toothpaste cannot alter the natural color of teeth or reverse discoloration by penetrating surface stains or decay, they can definitely help remove surface stains.

Many whitening toothpastes claim to whiten teeth, especially those that contain peroxide, however as the amounts are so small they are unlikely to do so, it is the ‘abrasion’ that removes daily plaque and tartar (which cause stains).

To remove surface stains, whitening toothpaste may include abrasives and additives such as sodium tripolyphosphate. When used twice a day, whitening toothpaste typically takes two to four weeks to make teeth appear more white.

ninja tipHighly recommended – The use of a combination of whitening toothpaste and a secondary tooth polish provides the best all round solution. A weekly regime, mixing a whitening toothpaste and a tooth polish can provide excellent results. The former removes daily stains, the latter especially one that contains liquid calcium can restore damaged surface enamel, leaving your teeth stronger and healthier.

If you suffer from tooth sensitivity then it is advisable to use a ‘sensitive’ toothpaste on a regular basis. These toothpastes such as Crest ‘Clinical’ Sensitive, Colgate Pro Relief or Sensodyne help reduce the issues of sensitivity.

3. Don’t Forget To Floss

It is quite normal for a toothbrush to miss certain areas of the tooth when trying to remove plaque and tartar, especially those areas in between the teeth. A failure to floss regularly can often lead to gum disease and decay. Choose a good floss that is strong and will not break – normally you can choose between waxed or un waxed versions and floss several times a week, if not once per day.

4. Rinse For Extra Strength & Whiteness

A mouth rinse (or wash) can enhance and improve a persons oral regime and has several key benefits. Whilst a mouth rinse should not be seen as a replacement for brushing and flossing it can help remove stains, fight plaque and tarter and if it contains fluoride protect against tooth decay.

5. Choose Your Teeth Whitening Kit

The final part in the process is to choose a good home teeth whitening kit that suits your lifestyle. One that is strong enough to be used once a year to remove all tooth stains allowing your normal oral care program to maintain that new smile for as long as possible.

If you do not have teeth sensitive to whitening you may want to choose a strong kit to obtain your best possible natural tooth shade.
